Fatal stabbing took place near Echo Park Lake restrooms

ECHO PARK —  The fatal stabbing of 28-year-old Hugo Castillo, who died after being attacked at Echo Park Lake in July, has left a big void in the lives of his family and friends, reports the L.A. Times.  His girlfriend, Yvonne Rosaz, is now left to care for Castillo’s two young sons. Says the L.A. Times:

“Now, Rosaz not only has lost her partner, but also the primary caregiver for her sons, ages 3 and 5. Castillo prepared family meals, always trying to make healthful food. He did the laundry and kept the house clean, Rosaz said.

Her sons are taking the loss hard. Evan, the oldest, has begun having tantrums. Lately, Erik has been listless. Rosaz herself can’t sleep. She has dreams in which Castillo is alive, and she wakes to the reality that he is gone.”

Castillo, a resident of South Los Angeles, was hanging out with friends near the public restrooms on the north side of Echo Park Lake when he was fatally stabbed by a man. The suspect, who is believed to be homeless, may have been angry over the mistaken belief that Castillo and friends were making fun of him, police said.  The suspect remains at large.

Police take Boyle Heights DUI suspect home instead of conducting investigation, D.A. says

BOYLE HEIGHTS —  A suspected drunk driver who allegedly crashed into two cars was taken to his home in a police vehicle and told to go to sleep by LAPD officers who later lied about the matter on a police report, the L.A. County District Attorney said today.

Officers Rene Marcial Ponce and Irene Gomez  have each been charged with one felony count of filing a false police report in connection with the Oct. 2014 crash that took place in the 3000 block of East Side Boulevard, according to the District Attorney.  Both officers pleaded not guilty on Sept. 7 and are scheduled to appear at a court hearing on Oct. 11.

It’s not clear why the officers allegedly tried cover up the driver’s involvement in the crash. Officials told the L.A. Weekly that the DUI suspect was not a public figure.

The District Attorney, in a press release, described the incident:

“On Oct. 26, 2014, Ponce and Gomez were on patrol in the Hollenbeck area when they responded to an early morning traffic collision in the 3000 block of East Side Boulevard. At the scene, an alleged drunken driver was accused of colliding with two parked vehicles, Justice System Integrity Division.

Ponce and Gomez allegedly avoided conducting a driving under the influence investigation and collectively wrote a traffic collision report in which they lied about the driver not being present at the scene, according to overt acts detailed in the felony complaint.

The charging document additionally alleges that Ponce and Gomez failed to conduct a sobriety examination, placed the driver in their patrol vehicle and drove him home where they directed him to go to sleep.”

The officers face a maximum sentence of three years in local custody if found guilty of the charges.

ECHO PARK —  A memorial was held for 11-year-old Yonatan Daniel Aguilar on Wednesday night as officials revealed that the boy weighed only 34 pounds when he was found dead in a closet last month.

A computer program used by the county’s Department of Children and Family Services had indicated several times that there was a high risk of abuse against Yonatan, according to social service and police records obtained by the L.A. Times. But social workers determined that “the allegations of physical abuse were inconclusive,” said the Times.

The boy’s mother, Veronica Aguilar has  pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse charges.

On Wednesday, family members gathered at Angelus Temple for a memorial service only a few blocks from where Yonatan’s body was found in his home near the corner of Santa Ynez and Rosemont Avenue.

The boy’s stepfather, Jose Pinzon, who called police about Yonatan’s death, said  that “he’s still alive for me because I carry him in my heart,” according to KTLA.

ELYSIAN VALLEY — One of two men suspected of shooting two cyclists during a robbery on the LA River bike path has been arrested, police said.

19-year-old David Umana was taken into custody on Thursday night in connection with the Sept. 9 shooting of a father and son who were riding on the path with their family. Umana is not from the area and is not associated with any gang, said detective Ryan Lamar with LAPD Northeast Division. The detective said the suspects are not believed to be connected to any other crime in the area.

The victims were riding on the L.A. River  path with their family at around 9 p.m. on when the two suspects demanded their bikes, said detective Larry Burcher with the Northeast Division. After an argument, the suspects shot the cyclists in the legs. One of the suspects rode away on one of the victim’s bikes.

The victims, a man in his late 20s and his father, in his late 40s, are recuperating, said police.

News of the arrest came the day before Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, along with officers of LAPD’s Northeast Division, hosted a community walk along the L.A. River bike path in Elysian Valley to “address public safety concerns and promote public safety,” said a statement released by the councilmember’s office.

“[O’Farrell] was extremely upset about the shooting, and says we’ve come too far and worked too hard to reduce crime in the area and improve the pathway for everyone in Elysian Valley,” said council spokesman Tony Arranaga.

Robberies and property theft happens on and near the L.A. River although it does not happen regularly, said Burcher. A man was shot and killed along the L.A. River earlier this year while riding his bike on the bike path in Bell Gardens.

“As far as people being robbed or their property taken at gunpoint or by bodily force, it happens more than I’d like it to happen, but it doesn’t happen on a regular basis,” said Burcher.

Advocates of restoring the river say improvements could help improve safety on the bike path. Some of their recommendations have included better lighting, cameras and an increased police presence.

MONTECITO HEIGHTS — Police today are investigating the death of a man who had hung himself from a chain link fence post near Avenue 43 and the Pasadena Freeway, said Capt. Martin A. Baeza with the LAPD Hollenbeck Division.

Residents said that Avenue 43 was blocked this morning and police vehicles and fire trucks with ladders extended were seen on the freeway overpass at about 8 a.m.

“Detectives will provide the coroner with assistance as the investigation progresses,” Baeza said in an email. “At this time, it is being handled as a suicide.”

The victim was a 29-year-old Latino who lived in the area, said Detective Jose Ramirez.  He had hung himself from a post attached to a fence that separates the Arroyo Seco channel from the freeway, he said. “There were no signs of foul play.”

MONTECITO HEIGHTS —  His body was found last week hanging from a fence post near Avenue 43 and the Arroyo Seco Parkway. Police said  that the victim, a 29-year-old Latino who lived in the area, had hung himself. But rumors about possible foul play have persisted, with some claiming that the man had been shot and his hands tied behind his back.   On Monday night, one week after the man was found dead, Capt. Martin Baeza of the Hollenbeck Division went before the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council to try and put those rumors to rest.

“The [man] was not shot nor were his hands tied,” Baeza said in an email after  his appearance before the council.  “The photo on social media does not show that either. The death is continuing to be investigated as a suicide with no evidence of foul play.”

According to detectives,  the man had hung himself from a post attached to a chain link fence that separates the Arroyo Seco channel from the freeway,

ECHO PARK — Two men are in police custody in connection with an afternoon shooting that left two injured in Echo Park on August 30.

The suspects, Jorge Morales, 21, and Ralph Mauricio, 20, were apprehended shortly after the incident, said investigating officer Justine Gvirtzman with LAPD’s Rampart Division. Morales and Mauricio are alleged to have shot two male Latinos in their 30s near Temple and Bixel streets.

One resident spotted a memorial in a nearby alley a few days after the shooting but police said both victims are alive. “The victims are in stable condition and continue to get better everyday,” said Gvirtzman.

Police believe the shooting was gang related.

Persons near the scene of the shooting said local gang members hang out near the scene of the shooting and feared gang members would seek retaliation for the shooting.

HIGHLAND PARK — Police continue to search for the suspects in a gang shooting that left one man injured early this morning.

ECHO PARK — A stretch of Sunset Boulevard near Dodger Stadium has been shut down as members of the LAPD bomb squad investigate a suspicious package.

Sunset is blocked at Douglas Street on the west and just east of Vin Scully Avenue. Several police vehicles are parked near a shopping center containing a Domino’s pizza and Button Mash bar and restaurant.

All traffic on Sunset, including Metro buses,  is being diverted to side streets or turning around. Pedestrians are not being allowed to enter the area.

Update @ 9:27 pm: The suspicious items were empty suitcases that had been left near the Super 8 Motel, said Sgt. Jack Richter with the LAPD Central Division. Police had received a call from someone at the motel who was concerned about the suitcases after they had remained unattended for most of the day. The suitcases were moved to the shopping center parking lot for closer examination.

The closure of Sunset caused a major inconvenience, Richter said, but “we are not going to take any chances.”

Update @ 8:47 pm: Pedestrians now being allowed to walk through as police leaving area.

MONTEREY HILLS — Police are asking for the public’s help to identify two suspects who stole $6,000 from a 92-year-old woman after following her home from a South Pasadena grocery store.

LAPD Hollenbeck Division officers responded to a report of grand theft that took place in the 4000 block of Via Marisol in Monterey Hills on July 3. The victim explained how a man followed her through the supermarket in the 1700 block of Garfield Avenue and out into the parking lot after she finished shopping. The LAPD, in a press release, then describes how the rest of the incident unfolded:

“While the victim was loading her groceries into her car, the male suspect got into his vehicle, where a female passenger was sitting waiting for him. The suspects positioned their vehicle directly behind the victim’s vehicle. When the victim pulled out of the parking lot, the suspects followed her. While the victim was driving on Huntington Drive, the female suspect signaled the victim to pull her vehicle to the curb. When the victim pulled over, the male suspect got out of his vehicle and told the victim that she had hit his vehicle at the grocery store parking lot. The victim told him there were no signs of damage to either of the vehicles but she became concerned and did not want to argue with the suspect. The victim was in fear and decided to offer to pay the suspect with a check. The suspect refused a check and demanded cash. The victim then offered to go to her home and pay him with cash. The suspects followed the victim home where she paid them some cash. The male suspect gave the victim a handwritten receipt while the female suspect then created a distraction by asking for a glass of water. While the victim was in the kitchen with the female suspect, the male suspect went into the victim’s bedroom and took approximately $6,000. Both suspects then left the home.”

The first suspect is described as a Latino with black hair and brown eyes weighing around 190 pounds. Surveillance footage shows he was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and black work boots. The second suspect is described as a Latina with black hair and was seen wearing a flowery dress.

The suspects were seen in a 2015-2016 white Mazda-CX3.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call LAPD’s Hollenbeck Burglary Detective Di Rosario or Officer Wilson at (323) 224-0108
